Surely having to bail out Greece, Ireland and Portugal; hints that Spain may need financial aid and now news that Italy is in trouble, must mean the end of the EU?

If it is, what will that mean to all those countries who are members? Do they go back to standing alone? Or will some of the stronger ones stay connected?

Or if it DOES survive, can it continue with the same structure? Surely the stronger populations will not want to keep bailing out the weaker economies?

Challenging times for sure - ann

Yes it is starting to look messy, I think if Germany stop handing out money the EU fun and games will be over - hopefully they will go back to their previous currencies, I have some old Greek notes somewhere!

I think Italy is in a bad way

Nothing is being done to reduce government spending and we have the third largest debt in the world so I assume we will have to leave the euro and default on some of our debt.

I am reducing my investments in Italy as quickly as possible.

Annie you sure are a trier. Gordon Brown was much maligned but he kept us out of the euro and our debts are like nothing to the Countries that are having to be bailed out. Considering that a certain part of the borrowing was to keep jobs, and this was tacitly agreed by all opposition parties, history will I believe paint him in a more benevolent light, because we still have our triple A rating for all the anguish.

The idea of a common currency was good, but not the rules that governed its operation.

Besides we started with the EEC as a trading partner. Who said anything about a common currency which makes us a federation of european states and as we have seen as soon as we stretch outside our brief which was a trading community, the whole thing has become so large that no-one can make a decision.

The Euro will be gone in 2020 and the UK will be on the dollar Ann. Britain is the 51st state. Personally I look forward to the dollar we'll be better off.

No problem, Germany will buy them all and if Germany is still too much into the war for talents as Lucas suggested recently . . . China will do. And if that happens, the noodle will become copyright and registered Chinese trademark . . . hehehe . . .

Andreas beautiful German cars cannot fund the whole of Europe. The Euro is dead and I think Germany knows it too.

If Mr. Berlusconi will go home (in one of his many ones...), we will rise again, of course with blood and tears, but we will rise.

Britain won't give up the pound. We have more up our sleeves, largely because we don't give up. America have as many problems to deal with as anyone else in the west.

Certainly interesting times everyone - in little old NZ we watch with great interest because suddenly our currency is stronger than ever. It used to be 3NZ dollars to a pound, now it is 2.

I feel for you Giorgio - we recently visited Venice and absolutely fell in love with the place.

Certainly everything is up in the air at the moment - who knows where all the chips will fall - China? Russia? both forces to be reckoned with given that the Western world got lazy, fat and arrogant. Are we witnessing the 'Fall of the Western Empire?'

Out of the ashes ....we will all survive. ann

Britain will give up the pound James by 2020. It's too small to matter in a Dollar, Yuan, Yen world. The Euro DMark will be all that's left of the 1999 dream. Economics does not tolerate European socialism.

Based on the assumption of amalgamation, Thomas; I think that's rather of old-fashioned. I see a more idiosyncratic model. World-merge is so yesterday.

You can't build a collective currency unless it's collaborative. See here > - Full article here >

Thomas' view that we'll take the dollar is interesting, but before that happens the special relationship has to truly collaborative or that too will fail. There's work for the Americans to do if it's to be in their benefit.

I honestly don't believe there is a special relationship. Most diplomacy is just fishful winking.
